LWHS Adopting Test-Optional Policy for Fall 2021 Admissions
Lick-Wilmerding High School seeks to foster a community of lifelong learners from all walks of life with the capacity, confidence, compassion and commitment to change the world. The LWHS Admissions Office supports this mission by crafting an equitable and accessible admission and enrollment process that values empathy, equity, and diversity. When evaluating applicants, our admissions committee places emphasis on a commitment to our mission and values in addition to academic potential. Our committee evaluates an applicant’s potential match with LWHS primarily through our review of student written responses, letters of recommendations from teachers and counselors, and grades.
With students applying to LWHS from over 175 different middle schools each year, we understand that our applicants have very different middle school experiences and always take this context into consideration as an important aspect of crafting our diverse school community. We know that COVID-19 has impacted every family in different ways and that this past spring in particular, students have had a range of distance learning experiences. We recognize and acknowledge this and are thinking about ways this will impact the application process next year.
Lick-Wilmerding High School is adopting a test-optional policy for students applying for admission for entry in Fall 2021. This means that SSAT, ISEE, or HSPT scores are not required to apply, though applicants may still choose to submit them. Test scores have always only been one part of our holistic application review. They provide one opportunity to present a student’s academic potential, but this potential can also be represented in other parts of their application. We will not make any assumptions as to why some students choose to submit a test score and some don’t, and applicants who do not submit test scores will not be disadvantaged in any way in our admissions process.
