Philosophy

Our mission is to bring together students from a variety of middle school backgrounds into a community of growing readers, thinkers, communicators, and listeners. We believe personal transformation occurs when students learn to use literature as both a mirror and window, so we center traditionally marginalized authors and texts about various human experiences, ethnicities, historical contexts, and resistance. Our program emphasizes processes over knowledge acquisition and perfectionism as a pedagogical antiracist practice, with the hope of cultivating lifelong learners who value empathy, curiosity, complexity, and justice.
