Tigers in Action on PPP Day

On Tuesday, November 4, LWHS held its second Public Purpose Program (PPP) Day of the school year, with students, faculty, and staff fanning out across the Bay Area to serve and learn alongside more than 40 community partners. From local schools to neighborhood parks and arts organizations, Tigers put their values into action—strengthening connections and making a positive impact.

The day’s projects highlighted the many ways LWHS engages with the broader community. The Performing Arts Department welcomed about 150 students from Aptos Middle School, St. Paul’s School, and the School of the Arts for the debut performance of Little Women. Following the show, students gathered on campus to enjoy live music from the LWHS Jazz Band and share a pizza lunch. This initiative underscores how meaningful access to our campus and the performing arts can be for young people in our extended community—an essential part of LWHS’ public purpose mission.

Beyond campus, members of the City Bookworms Club installed Little Free Libraries across San Francisco, the culmination of months of work designing and building the libraries on campus. Over on Haight Street, students helped paint a vibrant new mural featuring the powerful message: “The power of love is greater than the love of power.” Though the mural isn’t yet complete, we’re proud that LWHS students get to contribute to creating a lasting and beautiful piece of public art.

In addition to various other projects around the Bay Area, students also visited the National AIDS Memorial Grove to learn about the site’s history and contribute to its upkeep, while others used their language skills to translate materials into Chinese for community events hosted by the Ocean Avenue Association.
