Olive Tree Project: Peace through Dialogue and Coexistence

Before the semester concluded, students in Dr. Lopez’s U.S. and the Middle East history classes united to create a community art installation—a symbolic olive tree. In the Levant, the olive tree is revered as the “blessed tree,” embodying peace, resilience, and cultural continuity.

This collaborative project aimed to challenge prevailing narratives of division by showcasing stories of coexistence and shared humanity. The installation featured branches adorned with quotes that emphasized the importance of dialogue, empathy, and mutual understanding during times of conflict. These words served as a reminder of the power of communication in bridging divides and fostering peace.

Placed prominently in the main building stairway, the olive tree serves as a focal point for reflection, inviting the community to contemplate global events and their personal responses. This project not only beautifies the LWHS campus but also sparks meaningful conversations about identity, culture, and the role of education in promoting peace. By engaging in this artistic endeavor, students contributed to a collective expression of hope and solidarity, reinforcing the belief that even in challenging times, unity and understanding can flourish.
