Tigers made their marks across all fields and courts this past fall! Our student athletes continue to put their feet in the circle with grit, determination, sportsmanship, energy, inclusivity, and joy. Here’s a quick recap of our Fall sports:
FLAG FOOTBALL: Coming into the Semi-Finals boosting a 12-1 record, the Tigers looked to avenge their only loss of the season against Urban High School. Exceptional teamwork, with contributions from all over the field, delivered a decisive 39-6 victory and sent LWHS to the championship game. Once again, determination, enthusiasm, and the characteristic Tiger teamwork spirit helped the Tigers cruise to a 25-6 victory. In just our third year of the flag football program, the Tigers brought the championship home!
FIELD HOCKEY: Although the team is saying goodbye to 5 seniors, the coaches are excited for what the future holds for the program. Coach Damian stated when reflecting on the season, "We've worked really hard this season, and the team is hopeful that we will make the playoffs for the 2025 season. Many of our players have never played field hockey so for everyone to pick up this new sport and play in such a competitive league and only be 1 game away from making the playoffs, we can definitely be competitive next year." And in characteristic Lick-Wilmerding fashion, a group of LWHS players is planning to host clinics this coming spring for San Francisco youth, to encourage more young people to get involved with field hockey.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: The Varsity Girls Volleyball team completed their season with a 12-16 record, finishing 4th in the BCL-West, a testament to their perseverance and growth. Despite a challenging start, the team gained momentum and finished strong with key wins against Bay School, San Rafael, and Urban; they ultimately made it to the semi-finals of the BCL-West playoffs. And they made LWHS history as our first team to host a Public Purpose Program event. The girls put on a strong performance during their Dig Pink Night, defeating San Rafael 3-1 in an exciting match that was dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The team played with heart and determination, securing the win in front of a supportive crowd. The night was a success off the court as well, with the team collecting over 200 donations from students, families, and fans for their canned food drive.
GIRLS WATER POLO: The Lick-Wilmerding girls water polo team wrapped up the season with a record of 6-12, finishing in 7th place in the WACC. Despite challenges posed by numerous injuries throughout the season, 15 dedicated athletes competed, showcasing their resilience and commitment to the sport. The team gained valuable experience that will serve them well as they continue to develop their skills and teamwork. With the team saying goodbye to 4 seniors, including top defender Hannah P.'25, the team has Stella L.'26 and Ella R.'26 ready to lead the Tigers defensively and offensively. Goalie Sena W.'27 held down the Tigers with her quickness and ability to read the offense of our opponents. As the team looks toward the 2025 season, the focus will be on developing young talent and fostering a strong team culture.
BOYS WATER POLO: The Lick-Wilmerding boys water polo team concluded the season with a record of 6-14, securing 6th place in the WACC. With 31 student-athletes participating across both the varsity and JV teams-the program demonstrated strong engagement from the student body. Top Utility players such as Silas S.'25, and Henry G.'25 have helped create an offense that opponents struggle against. Lefty Mason M.'25 leaves goalies in shock with his quick pick up cross-cage shot to goal. Junior Utility Cilliam S. and Goalie Jake G.'26 will be key players to help the Tigers build up returners and newcomers next year. Despite hurdles, the players showed commendable perseverance and teamwork throughout the season.
GIRLS TENNIS: The 2024 Varsity Girls Tennis season has truly been one for the books! From thrilling matches to standout individual achievements, the team has exemplified resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship. With a strong foundation of talent and a legacy of excellence, Tiger Tennis is poised for continued success in the seasons to come. Congratulations to the players and coaches! Notably, Jocelyn G. ‘25 ended her illustrious high school tennis career with an outstanding legacy: a 21-4 singles record this season, 2nd team all-league honors, and accomplishments as a league quarterfinalist, NCS quarterfinalist, and 2-year team captain. Over three varsity seasons, Jocelyn compiled an incredible 50-14 singles record, solidifying her place as one of the greatest players in Tiger Tennis history.
GIRLS AND BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: 2024 was another strong year for LWHS Cross Country! With over 70 student athletes participating, the program remains a popular sport characterized by incredible team spirit and camaraderie. The season culminated at the North Coast Section Championship, where the course was heavily impacted by rain and mud, making navigation difficult and unpredictable for many runners. In the girls' race, Lick-Wilmerding athletes showed resilience, with standout performances from Ella M.'25, Caroline C.'27, and Ella A.-T.'28 securing second place as a team. The boys displayed remarkable tenacity, closing the gap to just two points behind tied third- and fourth-place teams, showing how pivotal minor margins were in the final standings.
Our girls team advanced to the California State Championship, an event that proved to be one of the most competitive in Division 5 history, with multiple teams breaking all-time records. LW’s standout performances came from Ella M.'26, who finished second with a personal best time of 17:47.4, and Ella A.-T.'28, whose impressive surge earned her the fastest time for a ninth grader in the race. Ultimately, LW claimed third place, narrowly missing second by six points. LW’s time of 95:22 marked the third-fastest in Division 5 history, reflecting their outstanding collective performance. Competing in one of the strongest fields ever, LW demonstrated teamwork, tenacity, and progression, capping a season of remarkable growth and achievement.
Congrats to all our student athletes: Fall 2024 was an unforgettable season for all, filled with growth, pride, and Tiger spirit!
